Creatures of habit

I can’t be the only one who eats the same set of meals, on a revolving basis. When you learn how to cook satisfying meals, it’s easy to get into the habit of having the same thing each week.

Knowing what you’re going to eat in advance, while far short of the ordeal of meal-planning, makes shopping easier and can help remove a little decision-making fatigue from your life. Trying to get the right balance of ingredients, enough variation to keep it interesting and meals which suit your budget takes mental energy. Once you’ve figured out what works, why change it?

It goes beyond what’s easiest though; there’s something about routine which is comforting and soothing. It’s one thing you can count on in a world where everything changes. In the same way ‘Fish Fridays’, or ‘Curry Thursdays’ are popular, people enjoy having these touchstones.

There’s a reason we go back to the same restaurants, order from the same takeaways and shop at the same supermarkets and it’s not just price or convenience. We like doing the same thing.

While I love discovering new meals and learning to cook different foods, sticking to what you know is sometimes delicious.
