This week I’m starting an online distance learning course from Future Learn about the global food system, food security and the politics, sociology and economics intertwined with those issues.
The course focuses on a problem we seem to already have an answer for. We produce enough food for everyone to have their nutritional needs met.
But 11% of the world’s population do not get enough to eat. And a growing number in developed countries are developing serious diseases and health complications as a result of obesity.
Taught by University of Reading lecturers, Our Hungry Planet will look at how what we buy, eat and throw away fits into the global food network.
I’m really excited to start – the content looks very interesting, the course load manageable, and of course, it’s free!
This is exactly the kind of area – food production and distribution – that I want to learn more about. It will be interesting to see how this fits into the shifts I’ve been developing in my own relationship with food; buying local, minimising packaging, cooking from scratch, less sugar (Tom has been ordered to cut down and moved onto special toothpaste!) and more vegetarian meals.
It lasts three weeks – I’ll report back then. In the meantime, I’d encourage anyone to have a look at the courses available. There’s loads to choose from.
